Houston Restaurant Reviews

We love to eat, and we love to eat out.  Our friends frequently ask us for  dining recommendations, and we try to stay current with all the new restaurant openings.  We aren't professional restaurant critics, and our day jobs have nothing to do with the food or restaurant industry.  We pay for all our meals.

There's just two of us, so we may only have the opportunity to visit a restaurant once before writing a review.  We won't  have been able to try a number of the menu items, so we invite you to share your experiences.

Thank you for visiting our website, and happy dining!

CLOSED SUMMER 2008

Three words:  Expensive Train Wreck

We wouldn't bother with any other comments, except the chef at Bohemia is Alberto Baffoni, the original chef/owner of Simposio, which opened a number of years ago to rave reviews, including from the national press.  Not sure where he disappeared over the years, but he lost his mojo.  He's back at a far Houston location, with limited resources, poor quality ingredients, and a hodgepodge menu of Italian and Eastern European dishes that are priced comparably to Houston's finest restaurants.    To add to the ethnic mix, there's belly dancing on Fridays and Saturdays, although not until 10:30 when we doubt there are any diners, given there were only three tables full when we arrived at 8:00 on a recent Saturday night.

The decor is tacky.  The food was disastrous.  And the service was sincere but inept,  starting with the bartender (and self proclaimed sommelier) who poured our Chianti by announcing that he hoped we were ordering meat since that was the only thing you could eat with a Chianti.  Actually, we drink red wine with everything, and we were ordering seafood.  He volunteered that Chianti was too "big" for him, and that he was really a fan of the Barolos, Barberas and Brunellos.  Go figure.

Neither of the featured menu items -- the whole grilled branzino or the whole lobster -- were available.  (We didn't realize that branzino is "seasonal" and, if that's the case, why do you have it on your printed menu?)  And this was a Saturday night at a new restaurant.  The best we could guess was they didn't anticipate enough diners to invest in pricey, perishable inventory.  The veal tonnato appetizer was inexpensive veal with a bland sauce.  The $31 grilled seafood platter was way overcooked, including inedible salmon.  The three "Secret Sauces" were salsa, balsamic vinaigrette, and tartar sauce.  (We're not kidding.)  The selected side dish -- asparagus and pancetta gratin -- showed up as just grilled asparagus.  The pistachios in the $32 pistachio crusted halibut were unrecognizable and burnt, as was the halibut.  The saffron sauce was yellow but otherwise tasteless.  The billed haricot verts that accompanied the halibut were grocery store green beans.

To top things off, a DJ and a lounge singer started in around 9:00; they were mediocre and quite loud.  Although they did help to damper the silence of an empty restaurant.

We're sorry to be so ugly, but this was really a bad experience.  (Read the review just posted on Houston Citysearch if you think we are critical.)

      Dear Carlos and Debbi,

I had the pleasure of serving you the night of the review. I was unaware you were having such a disastrous time. Had you mentioned you needed additional accommodation (making the music lower, for example), I would have been more than happy to assist. After all, that is my job, though I do thank you for calling my efforts "sincere." Though I do apologize that the sommelier did cause a damper on your evening.

Also, I would like to point out that you specifically asked for the halibut to be served with green beans only. That is why it did not come with any sides. Normally, it also comes with new potato and leek. The asparagus you ordered ($3) comes wrapped in prosciutto ham, however, you asked for this to be served sans-prosciutto.

Moreover, your seafood platter, our best selling seafood dish, which I might add, you finished completely, was only $21.00, as you used the coupon.

We have a new menu, with new prices. Do keep in mind, all ingreidents used are very high quality, most of which are organic, something most restaurants would never dream of. The cost to the kitchen for such ingreidents is high, and that is, truthfuly, reflected in the price. However, in this world, you get what you pay for.

Unfortunately, we were slow that particular Saturday. Remember, we are brand new, and building up a restaurant takes time and hard work - which I feel you are spitefully and personally are sabotaging. The weekend before your visit, we were packed, something to keep in mind.

We have removed branzino from our menu (and yes, it is seasonal and hard to obtain. Many restaurants pass off tuna as Branzino, however Alberto has more integrity than that!) Speaking of Mr. Baffoni, I have yet to hear anyone complain about his cooking.

I encourage you and any of your readers to give us another (or a first) try. I think you will find your experience to be far more enjoyable than this review reflects.

On a side note, I have read the Citysearch review in question. Do note that the user removed his review. Since then, we have gotten two additional and very possitive reviews. Your review is the only negative, let alone luke-warm review I have read.

If you do not like the food or the service, I will personally buy you another bottle of chianti; By the way, I agree with you that chianti does go well with a number of dishes.
